Scores Left Dead as Hutus Attack Camps

Hutu rebels wielding guns and machetes killed at least 135 people in attacks on refugee camps in northwestern Burundi, according to military officials and news reports. Jean-Luc Ndizeye, military ruler Pierre Buyoya’s spokesman, said “terrorists” in Cibitoke province attacked after residents refused to cooperate with them. “They killed 135 people, and we also have roughly 140 wounded and 350 burned houses,” Ndizeye said. News reports said the death toll in the attacks was as high as 235.
