Navajos to Speak on Land, Water Disputes
Navajo elder Katherine Smith and Sam Tso, director of the Dineh Nation, will speak about land and water rights disputes between the U.S government and the Hopi and Dineh nations at a lecture tonight at Cal State Northridge.
Smith and Tso will report on a meeting between Hopi and Dineh elders concerning the scheduled March 31 eviction of Navajo people from lands held in the Big Mountain Hopi/Dineh Reservation in Arizona.
The Dineh Nation, also known as the Navajos, has fought court battles against the Peabody Coal Co. over mineral and water rights at the reservation. A split among parts of the Hopi and Dineh leadership and residents over forced Navajo relocations has led to the current dispute.
The lecture, sponsored by the American Indian Student Assn., will start at 7 p.m. in the Grand Salon of the student union. For details, call Lupe Lopez at (818) 677-4904 or Sara Mendoza at (909) 865-7439.
