La Conchita Deck Removed by Caltrans

A Caltrans crew removed a community deck Wednesday that had been illegally erected last summer on the sand at La Conchita Beach.
The redwood deck was built by residents of the tiny beach-side community to improve access to the beach and provide a spot for get-togethers. It took crews using a large crane most of the day Wednesday to remove the deck.
“It was built pretty good,” said Dave Servaes, a regional manager for Caltrans. “They had actually drilled into the rock and anchored it.”
The deck was removed because of potential liability in the event of an accident, Servaes said.
“That’s what it really came down to,” he said. “They could not find any state agency that was willing to accept the liability, so it had to come down.”
The deck was built on Caltrans property, Servaes said.
He said the structure was removed without incident.
