Youth / News for the 18-and-under crowd
Two sixth-graders at Dickerson Elementary School were honored recently for acting quickly and safely by contacting adults after discovering a handgun in some bushes.
Brian Allen and James Pederson, both 11, saw the weapon while playing near Pederson’s house. After they realized it was not a toy, they put it down and quickly got help.
Investigators believe the handgun was used in a Jan. 14 supermarket robbery in the area, said Buena Park Police Sgt. Ken Coovert. Shortly after the robbery, two suspects were arrested but no gun was recovered.
The two boys were given certificates at a campus Spirit Day celebration.
“They did exactly the right thing, and they should be proud,” Coovert said.
