In the End, It was a One-Woman Team
Jack Single could not have been more aptly named, considering what befell his Rancho Santiago women’s basketball team Saturday.
The Dons started their Southern California playoff game against Pasadena with only seven players, and by the time the game had ended in a 75-74 overtime loss, they were down to only one player.
At one point, with 38 seconds left in overtime, Tanya Whitlock had no one to inbound the ball to because five teammates had fouled out and another was injured and couldn’t play.
Whitlock did the only thing she could, throwing the ball toward midcourt where a Pasadena player grabbed it and ran out the clock to complete the upset.
Rancho Santiago (19-8) was seeded 10th but needed a 24-10 run over the last 10 minutes to force overtime against No. 23 Pasadena (12-13).
Whitlock made a three-point basket with 15 seconds left in regulation to tie the score, 66-66.
At one point in overtime, Rancho Santiago was down to three players but went on a 6-0 run.
