New Edition’s Ricky Bell and R&B; veterans Teena Marie and Ike Turner have guest roles on “Alot On It,” the debut album from Inglewood hip-hopper Gooch, produced by Sir Jinx (who has worked with Ice Cube, Toni Braxton and Rage Against the Machine). . . .

Portishead is finishing its second album at home in Bristol, with release set for October. . . . The Sundays are working on a follow-up to 1992’s “Blind” in their London home studio. . . .

Rufus Wainwright, the 23-year-old son of Loudon Wainwright III and Kate McGarrigle, is working on a debut album for DreamWorks Records, which signed him last year after Van Dyke Parks gave a demo tape to his former Warner Bros. Records associate, DreamWorks co-head Lenny Waronker. Jon Brion is producing, with drummer Jim Keltner and keyboardist Benmont Tench having made guest appearances so far. . . .

Urge Overkill has a new label, moving to Sony’s 550 Records after two albums with Geffen, and a new member, guitarist Nils St. Cyr (who was briefly using the name Neil Armstrong) replacing departed Ed Roesser. The Chicago trio is writing songs for a new album, with plans to record in May for a fall release. . . .

British techno kingpin Aphex Twin (Richard James) has done a remix of Beck’s “Devil’s Haircut,” though the track will probably only be available as part of a European single. . . .

Exene Cervenkova did a guest vocal on a track for the major-label debut from Dallas band Old 97’s (due in June), while Waylon Jennings is teaming with the band for a single. Old 97’s is also set to join fellow country-influenced bands Whisky Town, the Picketts and Hazeldine on a package showcase tour put together by the Seattle-based No Depression magazine, slated to start March 14 at the South by Southwest convention in Austin. . . .

Before starting work on the next PJ Harvey record, the singer’s collaborator John Parish will produce the second album by dark-themed, Colorado-based trio 16 Horsepower.
