Series of Strong Earthquakes Rocks North Coast of California

A vigorous earthquake sequence was reported over several days on California’s North Coast, with a magnitude 5.6 main shock and strong aftershocks of 5.2 and 4.6. The quakes, which caused some glass and bottle breakage in the towns of Petrolia and Scotia, but no injuries, began the night of Jan. 21 and were centered just off the coast near Punta Gorda, 35 miles southwest of Eureka.
The area is one of the most seismically active in California. Humboldt State University seismologists say that on the average the North Coast gets 20 quakes a year of magnitude 4.0 or larger.
