Board Seeks Otis Campus for School

As part of its search for more elementary school space, the Los Angeles Board of Education on Monday unanimously approved making an offer on the former Otis Art Institute property near MacArthur Park.
Pending results of environmental and financial reviews, next fall the new school could accommodate at least 600 kindergarten through fifth-graders from congested neighborhoods of central Los Angeles, where thousands of students currently board school buses daily--more than from any other area.
Board members expressed concern that the proposal to spend $7.2 million obtaining and renovating the site came before them so quickly, but agreed to move forward after learning that other potential buyers were interested in the site.
Administrators said shrinking first and second grades increased the urgency of grabbing available space.
