Eight years after the Exxon Valdez oil spill, ecological recovery in Alaska’s Prince William Sound has been sporadic and uneven but shown progress, scientists at a three-day conference said. Only one species, the bald eagle, is considered fully recovered from the 1989 disaster, they said. Factors hampering recovery of other species in the region may be unrelated to the 11-million-gallon spill, the nation’s worst, said Bob Spies, chief scientist for the trustee council.
