Six New Squad Cars Approved for Police
The Police Department soon will receive six new squad cars to replace aging models.
City Council members this week agreed to buy six new Ford Crown Victoria police sedans and a Ford Expedition utility vehicle for the Fire Department. The total cost of the purchase will be $162,454--about $22,000 each for the cars and $28,688 for the truck.
The vehicles are to be delivered by March. Officers will drive the black-and-whites for patrols and daily police work. Older models will be converted for detectives, building inspectors and other municipal employees, City Manager Raymond H. Kromer said.
The Ford Expedition replaces a Chevrolet Suburban driven by the Fire Department’s battalion chief. Kromer said the department opted for a new Ford, which is similar to the Suburban and will save about $7,000.
Police officers typically drive squad cars for about three years and 100,000 miles. About 20 cars are in the current fleet, Kromer said.
