Mendoza Helps Mater Dei Girls Take First Alone

Charline Mendoza scored nine third-quarter points as Mater Dei defeated sixth-ranked San Clemente, 81-58, in a South Coast League game Tuesday. The fourth-ranked Monarchs (13-4, 4-0) took sole possession of first place with the victory.
San Clemente (14-5, 3-1), despite missing starters Amanda Engle and Colleen Turnbull, trailed by only four at halftime with the help of Taryn Commins. Commins had 19 points.
Engle is out because of a knee injury and Turnbull missed the game because of a sprained ankle.
Mendoza’s third-quarter points helped Mater Dei take a 63-47 lead at the end of the quarter.
