Luncheon to Examine Tourism in Valley

San Fernando Valley tourism officials today will begin what they hope becomes an annual event, staging the first Valley Economic and Tourism Forecast luncheon at the Radisson Valley Center Hotel in Sherman Oaks.
Jack Kyser, chief economist for the Economic Development Corp. of Los Angeles, will speak at the event, which will begin with registration and cocktails at 11:30 a.m.
Joan McClellan, executive director of the San Fernando Valley Convention and Visitors Bureau, said Kyser is expected “to share with our members the projected outlook in Valley tourism and lodging for 1997.”
Spurred by this September’s 200th anniversary of the San Fernando Mission, a Valley landmark, McClellan and other bureau officials are trying to emphasize the Valley’s appeal as a tourist destination. A new marketing push dubs the area “The Entertainment Valley,” a nod to television and film companies’ expansion in the area and offers tourists travel incentives for Valley visits.
The fee for Wednesday’s luncheon is $19.97 for bureau members, $35 for non-members.
