KABUL, Afghanistan — The Taliban religious army pushed northward into territory controlled by soldiers loyal to the former government Saturday and said it captured 200 of their troops.
The Kapisa province, where the Taliban was making its inroads, is partially controlled by troops loyal to ousted military chief Ahmed Shah Masoud and his new ally, warlord Abdul Rashid Dostum.
The Taliban controls about two-thirds of the country; an alliance led by Masoud and Dostum rules the northern third.
