Agoura Catches Fire, Simi Valley in Upset Victory
Agoura High picked the right time for its hottest shooting night of the season to upset Simi Valley, 82-79, on Wednesday night in a Marmonte League game at Agoura.
The Chargers (7-6, 4-1 in league) made 67% of their shots while ending the Pioneers’ run as the only undefeated team in the region. Simi Valley (14-1, 4-1) is ranked second in the region by The Times.
Marcus Helfman scored 19 points for Agoura and Ryan Shannon scored a season-high 16.
Simi Valley trailed by 12 points but closed the gap with six three-point baskets in the fourth quarter. Brett Michel scored 26 points, including six three-pointers.
Royal 59, Thousand Oaks 54--Nick Flanagan had 16 points and eight rebounds for the Highlanders (11-6, 3-2) in a Marmonte League game at Royal.
Joe Riccio had 20 points for Thousand Oaks (9-7, 2-3).
Newbury Park 74, Camarillo 68-- Daniel Bobek scored 34 points for the Panthers (9-7, 3-2) in a Marmonte League game at Newbury Park.
Mariano It had 22 points for Camarillo (7-7, 1-4).
Buena 59, San Marcos 49--The Bulldogs (9-6, 2-3) outscored the Royals, 25-1, in the final 10 minutes to overcome a 14-point deficit in a Channel League game at Buena.
St. Francis 60, Notre Dame 58--Chris Brugman hit an eight-foot at the buzzer to win a Mission League game at Notre Dame.
Brugman scored 19 points for St. Francis (11-7, 2-2). Jorge Piedra had 15 points for Notre Dame (1-8, 1-3).
Harvard-Westlake 84, Alemany 33--Jarron and Jason Collins played half the game and the Wolverines (19-1, 4-0) took a 53-9 halftime lead en route to a Mission League victory over Alemany (1-14, 0-4) at L.A. Baptist High.
Jarron Collins had 14 points and 15 rebounds and Jason had 17 points, 10 rebounds and seven blocks for Harvard-Westlake, the region’s top-ranked team.
Chaminade 56, Crespi 36--Scott Long had 19 points and 10 rebounds for the Eagles (12-4, 3-0) in a Mission League game at Crespi.
Ron Quarterman scored 19 points for the Celts (6-10, 2-2).
Oak Park 64, Bishop Diego 47--Randy Gastwirt had 20 points and John Murphy added 18 points and 16 rebounds for the Eagles (1-5, 1-0) in a Tri-Valley League game at Oak Park.
La Canada 70, San Marino 55--Ian Sullivan and John May scored 12 points each for the Spartans (11-6, 1-1) in a Rio Hondo League game at La Canada.
El Camino Real 67, Chatsworth 66--Justin Saad made two free throws with 12 seconds left and the Conquistadores (6-7, 1-0) rallied from 13 points down in the fourth quarter to edge the Chancellors (7-5, 0-1) in a Northwest Valley Conference game at Chatsworth.
Taft 43, Birmingham 41--Brandyn Fisher’s layup at the buzzer lifted the Toreadors in a Northwest Valley Conference game at Birmingham.
Amir Bar-Netzer had 13 points for Taft (10-4, 1-0).
San Fernando 67, Kennedy 50--Luis De La Rosa scored 28 points for the Tigers (7-7) in a Northwest Valley Conference opener at San Fernando.
Cleveland 58, Granada Hills 43-- Donald Holt had 20 points and 15 rebounds for the Cavaliers (13-3, 1-0) in a Northwest Valley Conference game at Granada Hills.
Desmond Williams added 12 points and 18 rebounds for Granada Hills (8-7, 0-1).
Hollywood 59, Verdugo Hills 55-- Joe Moore scored 16 points and had seven assists for the Dons (2-14, 1-4) in a Northern League setback at Verdugo Hills.
Grant 39, Van Nuys 36--Adir Levy scored 16 points for the Lancers in a Valley-Pac 8 Conference game.
Gilbert Arenas added 17 points for Grant (4-9, 1-0).
Poly 76, Monroe 54--Ellis Richardson scored 24 points and the Parrots (10-5, 1-0) outscored the Vikings by 20 points in the third quarter in a Valley-Pac 8 game at Poly.
Canoga Park 81, Reseda 60--Carloes Harper scored 38 points and the Hunters (9-7, 1-0) beat the Regents in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game at Reseda.
