Kickoff? Cal State Northridge is expected to introduce Jim Fenwick, Valley College’s coach the past six seasons, as its new football coach at a news conference today (C1). Fenwick, 44, is 49-14-1 at Valley and his teams have finished 10-1 in each of the last three seasons. The other finalists were Wake Forest defensive coordinator Chris Allen and Missouri assistant Skip Hall.

Mighty Oak: The 1,000-year-old Lang oak in Encino, endangered by a fungus and various other hazards of urban life, held up just fine during the high winds, said Judith Hirshberg, deputy to City Councilman Marvin Braude. . . . A community group has raised $3,000 for medical care for the tree, which is bouncing back from its earlier troubles and sprouting new branches.

Chavez Mural: A new mural by San Fernando artist Lalo Garcia depicts the life of labor leader Cesar Chavez, with each of five panels showing a different aspect of his life. The mural is on a wall of the San Fernando Valley Partnership building in San Fernando (B3).
