Santa Ana Rallies Past Marina in Boys’ Soccer
After being shut out in the first half and down by one goal, visiting Santa Ana scored twice in the second half to beat Marina, 2-1, Thursday in a nonleague boys’ soccer game.
Mario Gonzalez started Santa Ana’s scoring in the first minute of the second half after taking the ball down the field for the unassisted goal. The Saints’ Isreal Lazo scored the second goal, also unassisted, 10 minutes later.
Santa Ana, ranked seventh in the county, is 7-0-1.
In the Central Coast boys’ soccer tournament:
Mater Dei 2, Lompoc Cabrillo 0--Walter Carmago and Kris Hulgreen each scored a first-half goal in a second-round victory for Mater Dei.
Anthony Micheletti scored two goals for the Monarchs (8-0-1) in an earlier first-round victory over Templeton, 3-1.
In nonleague girls’ soccer:
Huntington Beach 3, North Torrance 1--Kendra Brissey scored two goals for Huntington Beach. Katie Wilson also scored a goal for the Oilers (4-4-2).
Goalie Blythe Curran had nine saves for Huntington Beach. Natalie Franklin scored a goal for North Torrance (3-5-2).
In the Santiago girls’ basketball tournament:
El Modena 46, Santiago 35--Karen Herco scored 14 points in the pool-play victory for El Modena (5-3). Teammate Amanda Lopez scored nine points. Stacey Trujillo scored a game-high 19 points for Santiago.
Fullerton 44, Corona del Mar 43--Cara Dykes’ made one of two free throws to give Fullerton the victory. Dykes had 20 points to lead Fullerton. Corona del Mar’s Lindsay Warmington had a game-high 32 points.
In the Savanna tournament:
Bellflower 43, Calvary Chapel 24--Chaunita Smith scored 21 points as Bellflower (10-2) defeated Calvary Chapel in one semifinal. The Buccaneers play Archbishop O’Leary of Canada, a 59-57 winner over Santa Margarita, in the final.
Whitney Hoover had nine points for Calvary Chapel (9-5).
La Habra 55, Lakewood St. Joseph 51--Morgan Morris scored 14 points and had 10 rebounds for La Habra (7-7). Neither team led by more than three points until Morris made a free throw with 24 seconds left for the final score.
Nori McCrystal scored 12 points for the Highlanders.
Santa Ana 39, Buena Park 34 (OT)--
Carol Gonzalez had 28 points, five rebounds and five assists to lead Santa Ana (2-11).
Torrance 42, Cypress 37 (OT)--Vivian Chung scored 12 points and Lisa Choi added 10 for Cypress (8-5).
Valencia 44, Archbishop MacDonald (Canada) 43--Valencia was able to hold off a fourth-quarter surge by MacDonald. Kelly McKibben scored 12 points for Valencia and teammate Allison Jacobs had 23 rebounds.
In nonleague girls’ basketball:
Heritage Christian 33, Santa Monica Lighthouse Christian 24--Melissa Caparino scored 10 points and April West added nine for host Heritage Christian (4-6).
Irvine, University game rescheduled--The girls’ basketball game between University and Irvine Thursday night was rescheduled for Saturday at 4 p.m. at Irvine High School.
