Accident Closes Pacific Coast Highway
A woman driving a pregnant 15-year-old girl in labor to a hospital lost control of her car on a rain-slick portion of Pacific Coast Highway on Thursday, hitting a utility pole and temporarily closing the highway.
Firefighters used a hydraulic tool to free the woman, who was pinned inside the car’s wreckage in the 5 a.m. crash on PCH near Sunset Boulevard, said Brian Humphrey, a Los Angeles City Fire Department spokesman.
The woman was listed in fair condition with head and knee injuries at UCLA Medical Center.
The pregnant teenager, who was slightly injured, was taken to St. Johns Hospital and Health Center, where she was expected to deliver her baby, a spokeswoman said.
Other passengers in the car, a 16-year-old pregnant teenager and her child, suffered minor injuries.
The northbound lanes of the highway were shut down for a brief period, while the southbound lanes were closed for an hour while crews repaired the utility pole, Los Angeles police said.
