Woman Escapes Apartment Fire Through Window

A 34-year-old woman woke up to the piercing alarm of her fire detector Wednesday and jumped out of her second-story window to safety because the blaze in her apartment blocked her front door exit, fire officials said.

“Luckily, there was a porch landing so she actually only had to jump a few feet,” said Tabby Cato), a spokeswoman for the Anaheim Fire Department. The woman, Debra Orosco, 34, suffered minor smoke-related injuries, Cato said.

The fire occurred in Orosco’s home, at Canyon Village Apartments on North Chrisden Street, at 5:44 a.m. Orosco, who was alone, was jolted from her sleep by the smoke detector.

“She opened the bedroom door and found the rest of the apartment on fire and she could not exit through the front door,” Cato said, adding that Orosco then jumped.

The blaze was apparently sparked by an electrical fire caused by a wire that was “pinched between a table and the sofa,” Cato said.

Firefighters was able to contain the blaze to Orosco’s apartment, which sustained $20,000 in structural damage and $10,000 for the personal belongings inside.
