Hawaiian Gardens May Build Interim Card Club
Legal wrangling over a proposed card club in Hawaiian Gardens may not keep the city from receiving gambling revenues after all.
An attorney for casino developer Irving Moskowitz said an interim card club is under consideration. He said such a facility could provide the revenues that were promised when city voters approved the casino last year.
Moskowitz’s lawyer, Beryl Weiner, has maintained that litigation filed on behalf of former Councilwoman Kathleen Navejas stands in the way of opening the club. But Weiner said that because the lawsuit specifically targets Moskowitz’s Hawaiian Gardens Card Club Inc., a casino built under a different name might be exempt from the lawsuit.
Navejas’ lawyer, Fredric Woocher, called the idea a “shell game,” and noted that the litigation accusing Moskowitz of various conflicts of interest does not prevent him from building the club. But he added that the interim card club might not be exempt from the lawsuit.
