SEASON AT A GLANCE: Gonzalez, 44-10 last season and the first sophomore in Ventura High history to advance to the state finals, is 19-0 with 13 pins this season at 189 pounds. Gonzalez, a defending Channel League champion, placed first at the Newbury Park and Rio Mesa tournaments.
WEEK AT A GLANCE: Gonzalez pinned John Ciardellini of Arcata in 3:57 in the championship match of the Sierra Nevada tournament Saturday in Reno. Gonzalez was 6-0 in the tournament, including four pins. Ventura placed fifth at the 82-team tournament, which included several of the top teams in California.
