Boy Released From Hospital After Being Badly Burned
An 11-year-old Long Beach boy who suffered burns over 30% of his body in a vicious attack was released from Torrance Medical Center on Tuesday.
Mark Limones Cortez was honored at the hospital’s regional burn center, received a T-shirt signed by the burn center’s staff and got a ride home on a Long Beach Fire Department truck with the crew that responded to the Dec. 15 attack.
Mark told reporters at a hospital news conference that the first thing he wanted to do when he got home was “play with my brothers and sisters.”
Mark said he was held down by a 15-year-old boy who poured rubbing alcohol on him and set it ablaze. Mark was burned on his chest, abdomen, thighs and lower legs. He underwent skin graft surgery during his two-week hospitalization.
Another boy was reportedly attacked, but was not hurt.
The alleged assailant was booked on suspicion of attempted murder. He remains in custody and is awaiting a decision on whether he can be tried as an adult.
