Verdugo Hills 12, Roosevelt 7--Charlie Coronado caught a 13-yard touchdown pass from Ethan Slimak with 41 seconds left as Verdugo Hills High rallied for a 12-7 victory over Roosevelt in a first-round City Section 3-A Division game Friday afternoon at Verdugo Hills.
Coronado, who had eight receptions for 105 yards, accounted for all of Verdugo Hills’ yardage on the game-winning drive. He had four consecutive catches for 31 yards.
“They were giving us the short pass so we tried to take advantage of it,” Coronado said. “After those two long passes earlier, they were giving me a pretty big cushion.”
Trailing, 7-0, after a rain-soaked first half, Verdugo Hills (7-4) drove 53 yards in six plays on its second possession of the third quarter to cut its deficit to 7-6.
Sean Standley capped the drive with a 16-yard touchdown run, but a fumbled exchange between center Jim Partida and Slimak prevented a two-point conversion attempt.
Standley was held to 54 yards in 22 carries after missing most of the first half with an injury to his left knee.
Roosevelt (5-6) scored its only touchdown with less than two minutes left in the first half when quarterback Fernando Delgadillo connected with receiver Javier Romero on a short slant pattern that Romero turned into a 35-yard play on a fourth-and-five situation.
