Barry Helps Ventura To Conference Crown

Joy Barry scored her ninth and 10th goals of the season to lift the Ventura College women’s soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Moorpark on Friday, giving the Pirates the Western State Conference title.
Ventura (22-2-1, 14-1-1), a first-year program, defeated Moorpark (15-4-1, 12-3-1), the defending conference champion, twice this season.
The Pirates have qualified for the State playoffs and will likely host a first-round match Tuesday, Coach Steve Hoffman said. Cuesta will be the WSC’s second and final playoff participant. Moorpark did not qualify.
Barry gave Ventura a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute on a 30-yard free kick. Korina Kozub-Casas tied the match for Moorpark in the 34th minute. Barry scored the match-winner in the 79th minute on a 50-yard free kick.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
The Master’s 81, Cumberland 63--Senior guard Mike Penberthy scored 28 points and had five steals for the Mustangs (3-0) in the first-round of the Urbana (Ohio) tournament.
Senior center Leo Gorauskas added 18 points and 12 rebounds for Master’s, the No. 6-ranked team in NAIA Division I.
Ninth-ranked Cumberland (4-1) made only 28.1% of its shots in the second half.
Cal Lutheran 82, Colorado College 77--Mike Salser and Andy Saint hit consecutive baskets to give the Kingsmen a 78-73 lead with 1:30 left in the first-round of the Menlo College tournament.
Salser had 17 points--and hit seven of 10 shots from the field--and Saint added 16 points and 10 rebounds for Cal Lutheran (1-0), which will play the winner of the Menlo-UC Santa Cruz game for the tournament title tonight.
Glendale 77, Rio Hondo 70--Carl Biel scored 22 points and Ryan Sylva added 15 and 13 rebounds to lead the host Vaqueros (3-2) in a nonconference game.
Moorpark 75, Cypress 68--Ben Tryk scored 17 points, and Marques Pena and Anthony McCurtis each had 13 points for the Raiders (3-0) in the first round of the Desert tournament.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Cal Lutheran 74, Stony Brook (N.Y.) 73--Melissa Wood scored 27 points, making six of 10 three-point shots, to lead the Regals to a season-opening victory in the Cal Poly Pomona tournament.
Canyons 90, Victor Valley 65--Kyetra Brown scored 26 points and Nikki Turner added 20 for the Cougars.
