Water Heater Blamed in Fire; No One Hurt

A family of five was driven from their home Monday following a fire caused by a faulty water heater, Oxnard fire officials said.
The blaze began about 11:30 a.m. at 2200 Greenbrook Drive and was limited to the garage and attic, authorities said. There was no estimate on the damage.
Josefina Frescas was at home with her 21-year-old daughter-in-law, Patricia Mata, and 11-month-old granddaughter, Kristian Mata, at the time of the blaze. Frescas smelled smoke but told authorities she thought it was from a barbecue.
A neighbor noticed smoke and flames coming from inside the garage and notified Frescas. No one was injured.
Frescas’ son and her daughter, Josie Mata, were both at work when the house caught fire.
The fire was out at noon, and the Red Cross was assisting Frescas and her family Monday afternoon.
