Garden Grove Gets a Share of Girls’ Tennis League Title
Garden Grove earned a share of the league title by defeating 10th-ranked Los Amigos, 11-7, in a Garden Grove League girls’ tennis match Tuesday at Los Amigos.
The victory marked the second time in the Argonauts’ 75-year history that they have won consecutive league titles.
Jamie Kong and Cynthia Tran, and Tam Dang and Quinh Nguyen swept in doubles for Garden Grove (16-2, 9-1).
Veronica Summer swept in singles, 6-1, 6-3, 6-0, to remain undefeated in league play for Los Amigos (17-1, 9-1).
In the Freeway League:
Troy 18, Sonora 0--Troy (15-2, 10-0) won its first league title since 1975.
In the South Coast League:
Mater Dei 11, Capistrano Valley 7--Freshman Melissa Esmero swept, 6-1, 6-0, 6-0, to finish undefeated in league for host Mater Dei (13-5, 8-2).
At the Pacific Coast League boys’ cross-country finals:
Costa Mesa wins--Although University’s Martin Brix won in 15:36, Bruce Hancock was second in 15:40 over three miles at Irvine Park to pace Costa Mesa, ranked second in Division IV.
Costa Mesa won with 45 points and Estancia was second (64). Estancia and Laguna Hills all automatically qualified for the section prelims.
At the Pacific Coast League girls’ cross-country finals:
University wins--Allyson Marquand won in 17:33 over three miles at Irvine Park and Misha Wilson was fourth in 18:32 to lead the Trojans to the league title with 38 points. Laguna Beach’s Lindsey Buwalda was second in 18:25.
In Garden Grove League water polo:
Garden Grove 15, Los Amigos 5--Garden Grove clinched its first league title since 1979. Jeff Colton scored five goals to lead the Argonauts (17-6, 4-0).
