WWII Warplanes Land in Palm Springs

A new air museum with a rotating collection of about 30 U.S. fighting planes from World War II is scheduled to open in Palm Springs on Veterans Day.
The $3-million, nonprofit Palm Springs Air Museum houses one of the larger collections of its kind, says development director Fritz Frauchiger. All but two of the aircraft can still fly, he added.
“We have almost everything that flew in World War II on the American side,” Frauchiger said. They include the Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress bomber, the Lockheed P-38 Lightning and the Grumman “cats” fighter series.
The museum, at the Palm Springs Regional Airport, also has war murals, memorabilia and an education program. Opening ceremonies begin at 10 a.m. Nov. 11. Museum admission is $7.50 adults; lower rates for childrem, seniors and the military. Information: (619) 778-6262..
