Mammoth Mountain to Open Friday

With snow-making underway and natural snowfall last week, Mammoth Mountain Ski Area in the Sierras has scheduled its 1996-’97 season opening for Friday.
This year, for the first time, Mammoth has the capability of making snow from its lowest slopes to the mountain’s 11,053-foot-high summit, including the Cornice Bowl, a black-diamond run from the top of Mammoth, and on the area known as the Face of Chair 3. In the Lake Tahoe area, Squaw Valley, site of the 1960 Winter Olympics, plans to open Nov. 15; tel. (916) 583-6985.
Locally, Bear Mountain at Big Bear began making snow Oct. 25 and plans to open Friday, weather permitting; tel. (909) 585-2519.
