In other South Coast tournament games:
Esperanza 7, Newport Harbor 6--Chad Simendinger scored three goals for 10th-ranked Esperanza in the consolation championship. The Aztecs (5-2) trailed by one at the half, but took the lead by outscoring ninth-ranked Newport Harbor, 2-0, in the third quarter.
Esperanza reached the consolation finals by defeating eighth-ranked Servite, 13-10. Simendinger had seven goals in the victory over the Friars. Newport Harbor (3-4) had won its earlier game, 9-3, over Laguna Beach.
Los Alamitos 10, El Toro 9 (OT)--Tyler Wawrzynski scored the winning goal for Los Alamitos in overtime. Wawrzynski scored four goals in the game for the Griffins (8-3), who finished seventh.
At the Magnolia water polo tournament:
Cypress 16, Pacifica 9--Erik Sandvig scored seven goals as Cypress won the consolation championship. Goalie James Hicks had 13 saves for the Centurions (4-2).
Sandvig scored five goals in an earlier 10-8 victory over Loara.
Western 13, Mater Dei 8--The consolation game was overshadowed when Mater Dei’s Danny Clecek punched Western’s James vanRosmalen above water.
VanRosmalen was taken to a hospital and treated for a cut that required 15 stitches. Clecek was ejected from the game.
In nonleague girls’ tennis:
Corona del Mar 14, Santa Barbara San Marcos 4--Teammates Caylan Leslie and Nadia Vaughan swept at No. 1 doubles, 6-1, 6-2, 6-2, to lead top-ranked Corona del Mar (7-0).
In the University girls’ volleyball tournament:
El Modena wins championship game--El Modena breezed through the quarterfinals, 15-2, over Century, then slipped past Long Beach Millikan in the semifinals, 15-13, before defeating Los Alamitos in the championship game, 15-6.
