Friday’s Games
NONLEAGUE
No. 4 Servite (0-0) vs. No. 3 Esperanza (0-0), Valencia HS, 7 p.m.
This is more than an opener. This is a chance for two teams with championship aspirations to make an early, declarative statement. It may be more important to Esperanza, which needs to start erasing the stigma of its first-round playoff pratfall after winning the Sunset League. “We need to be tested,” Esperanza Coach Gary Meek said. “We’ve had one scrimmage and everything else has been practice. You need to see where you stand; you can only do so much against yourself.” The Golden West League champion Friars made it to the Division V finals and is favored to get there again.
