CPR Sign-Ups Boom in Wake of Drownings

To help combat a wave of drownings this summer, the Orange County Fire Authority is offering a series of free classes in cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
More than 350 people have already signed up for the CPR program, which will continue through Sept. 28.
Response has been so heavy, fire officials said, that they will schedule another series of classes in October and November.
“We are in the middle of a drowning epidemic,” Capt. Scott Brown said. “Learning CPR is one of the most important steps in the chain of survival.”
So far this year, there have been 35 drowning or near-drowning incidents in the county resulting in 12 deaths. Most of the fatalities have been children 5 or younger, Brown said.
CPR classes will be at fire stations across the county on weekend mornings and afternoons.
