School District Budget Includes Surplus

More bilingual English instructors may be among the windfalls in the 1996-97 school district budget adopted this week, with a $5-million surplus.
The Santa Ana Unified School District’s $259-million budget is approximately $18 million more than last year’s due, in part, to an estimated $6 million extra from the state for special programs.
The surplus may be spent on any number of projects the school board has included on a wish list. Board President Sal Mendoza said he hopes to call for a special meeting by next week to discuss the money.
The most costly expenditure on the wish list is $532,000 for 30 bilingual English instructors.
The hires would not increase the size of the district’s English programs. Rather, they are needed to maintain current levels of instruction because the district expects increased enrollment and decreased federal funding, according to the wish list memo.
