Hurricane Edouard Racing Westward

From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Edouard, the season’s strongest Atlantic hurricane to date, appeared to be headed well north of the Leeward Islands on the eastern rim of the Caribbean. Edouard’s sustained winds, which had earlier slacked to about 130 mph, climbed to 140 mph, the same top speed as Sunday, the National Weather Service said. Forecasters at the hurricane center in Miami were not predicting whether the hurricane would make landfall in the U.S.
