Fixed-Route Shuttle Routes Get Into Gear
The goal was to relieve traffic, not stop it.
But Paramount officials say their new fixed-route shuttles--purple vans painted like hot rods--turned a few heads Monday.
Switching from taxi-style service to two routes with more than 40 regular stops, the city unveiled two vans featuring shiny exhaust pipes, aluminum rims and red racing flames.
“They’re kind of wild,” Assistant City Manager Linda Benedetti-Leal said. “A lot of people have been staring at [the buses] when they go down the street.”
The routes include several schools, shopping locations and civic centers. Riders can get on for free through Friday; after that the fare becomes 50 cents.
Officials noted that they will still offer on-call bus services to elderly and disabled citizens, as well as people who live more than three-quarters of a mile from the nearest stop.
