Africans Ask Court for Legal Residency

Several dozen Africans hoping to win legal residency pleaded their cases before a judge a day after the government deported 57 fellow immigrants, some of whom were forced from refuge at a Paris church. A court in the capital is considering the cases of about 50 of the 220 Africans whose two-month occupation of St. Bernard Church sparked a national debate over immigration, race and unemployment.
