MIXING IT UP

Patrick Goldstein gets only half of the post-production crunch right (“Now, There Are Bigger Sharks in the Water Every Summer,” Aug. 18).

Yes, the 20-week film editing process has indeed been slashed in half, necessitating “squads of editors.” However, sound editors do not mix the film. Their credit is self-explanatory: They edit sound. It’s the re-recording mixer’s job to take the sound editors’ hard work (dialogue, music and sound effects) and mix them to the director’s/producer’s/film editor’s/composer’s/etc. taste.

As one of many re-recording mixers who gets caught up in the now-burgeoning post-production squeeze problem on nearly every film, I thought it would be nice to see credit given where it’s due.
