Men’s 10,000, Women’s 1,000 World Records Broken at Belgium

Morocco’s Salah Hissou broke the world 10,000-meter record, Russia’s Svetlana Masterkova set a women’s 1,000 mark, and 110-meter hurdles champion Allen Johnson came within one hundredth of a second of another record Friday at the Van Damme Memorial track meet at Brussels.

Hissou clocked 26 minutes 38.08 seconds to shave 5.45 seconds off the 10,000 record set by Ethiopia’s Haile Gebrselassie in June 1995.

Masterkova, the Olympic 800- and 1,500-meter gold medalist who also set the 1,500 world mark in Zurich nine days ago, clocked 2:28.98 in the seldom-run 1,000 meters. Maria Mutola of Mozambique, who owned the previous mark of 2:29.34, was second.

Johnson ran 12.92 seconds in unfavorable rainy conditions.

Michael Johnson cruised to a 400-meter victory in a modest 44.29, which still left the field trailing by five yards.

Obea Moore of Pasadena won the 400 meters in a meet-record 45.27 seconds at the World Junior championships at Sydney, Australia.

Boxing

Vinny Pazienza, getting pounded for the first three rounds, scored a stunning fourth-round knockout over unbeaten Dana Rosenblatt in a scheduled 12-round super-middleweight fight at Atlantic City, N.J.

Referee Tony Orlando stopped the fight at 2:13 of the fourth, but Pazienza (41-6) wasn’t finished. He kept punching, knocking Orlando to the canvas with a right before state boxing commissioner Larry Hazzard rushed into the ring to stop him.

Also, junior-welterweight Rafael Ruelas (45-3) scored a unanimous decision over 35-year-old Livingstone Bramble.

Tennis

Karol Kucera of Slovakia, ranked 86th in the world, came up with the biggest victory of his career, a 6-4, 6-4 win over top-seeded Michael Chang in the quarterfinals of the Hamlet Cup at Commack, N.Y. Fifth-seeded Andrei Medvedev of Ukraine overcame a strong challenge from unseeded Jonathan Stark, 7-6 (7-4), 4-6, 6-3.

Todd Woodbridge defeated fellow Australian Mark Philippoussis, 7-5, 6-4, to reach the semifinals of the du Maurier Open at Toronto. Woodbridge, ranked 43rd in the world, will take on fourth-seeded Marcelo Rios of Chile.

Kimiko Date of Japan defeated Argentina’s Gabriela Sabatini in the quarterfinals of the Toshiba Classic at Carlsbad. Top-seeded Arantxa Sanchez Vicario of Spain defeated Katarina Studenikova of Slovakia, 6-3, 6-3.

Chanda Rubin, seeded 11th, has pulled out of next week’s U.S. Open because of a wrist injury.

Golf

Defending champion Isao Aoki and Larry Ziegler shot 67s and were tied for the first-round lead of the Bank of Boston Senior PGA Classic at Concord, Mass. . . . Defending champion Greg Norman birdied four of the first six holes before heavy rain and lightning suspended the second round of the World Series of Golf at Akron, Ohio. . . . Lee Janzen, Taylor Smith and Guy Boros shot six-under-par 65s and joined Emlyn Aubrey and Jeff Maggert atop the leaderboard at six-under 136 midway through the Greater Vancouver Open at Cloverdale, Canada. . . . Pat Hurst shot a five-under 67 and held a one-stroke lead over six players after the rain-delayed first round of the Star Bank LPGA Classic at Dayton, Ohio.

Jeff Fuller held off Dale Jarrett for the last 61 laps in the Food City 250 at Bristol, Tenn., and came up with his first Busch Grand National stock car victory. . . . Mark Martin won his fourth consecutive pole at Bristol Motor Speedway for tonight’s Goody’s Headache Powders 500. . . . Austrian Gerhard Berger completed the fastest lap in qualifying for Sunday’s Formula One Belgian Grand Prix. . . . A rally car driven by Richardt Karsten of Denmark plunged into the crowd during the 1,000 Lakes race, injuring 26 at Jyvaskyla, Finland.

Jurisprudence

Miami linebackers James Burgess and Jeffrey Taylor were suspended for their involvement in an attack on a fellow athlete. The players were charged with trespassing in connection with wide receiver Jammi German’s alleged June 19 attack on track athlete Maxwell Voce.

Four Mississippi State football players, including three starters, will go to court next month to fight malicious mischief charges filed by a woman who claims they broke her car window.

Quarterback Derrick Taite, linebacker Dwayne Curry, tailback Keffer McGee and top reserve receiver Michael Brown are free on their own recognizance pending a Sept. 5 court date at Starkville, Miss.

Former NBA forward Xavier McDaniel pleaded not guilty to the charge of domestic-violence assault against his girlfriend in King County, Washington. . . . Bantamweight boxer Tim Austin, who won a bronze medal at the 1992 Olympics, pleaded not guilty to charges of beating his ex-girlfriend and her brother at Cincinnati.

Mike Dodd and Mike Whitmarsh, the Olympic silver medalists in beach volleyball, lost, 12-11, to the 36th-seeded team of David and Aaron Smith in the first round of the $175,000 Miller Lite U.S. Championships at Hermosa Beach. Gold medalists Karch Kiraly and Kent Steffes breezed through two matches to reach today’s quarterfinals.

Ralph Bayard, senior associate athletic director at Washington, says the NCAA Council is recommending that college athletes be allowed to hold part-time jobs in the off-season during the school year. “It’s not official yet--the NCAA membership has to vote on it in January--but we’re hoping,” Bayard said.

Austin Croshere of Providence led five players in double figures with 14 points as the U.S. crushed Uruguay, 104-40, in the first round of the Pan American Under-22 Basketball Championships in Caguas, Puerto Rico.
