California Flux

* Many thanks to Peter King for his essay, “ ‘The Same Road Led Everyone to This Place’ ” (Aug. 11), which warmly portrays the California I recognize as my home. My mother and father both came here from Oklahoma in the 1930s, met and married here, and made this place their home.
I live in the town where I was born, and for almost 30 years now my work has been teaching English to people who come from other countries hoping to make it their home too.
I love this state and feel comfortably rooted in the flux of the place--the migrant past, the immigrant future. As Mama often said when the family table was filled with the food she and my father had worked hard to provide, “We’ll set another place; y’all come.”
