Mitch Williams’ attempt at a comeback ended when the Phillies gave the 31-year-old pitcher his unconditional release.
Since coming out of retirement on July 5, Williams was 0-0 with a 2.25 ERA in six games with the Phillies’ Class A Florida State League team and 1-2 with a 10.67 ERA in eight games with triple-A Scranton-Wilkes-Barre.

Detroit activated outfielder Melvin Nieves from the 15-day disabled list and optioned right-hander Brian Williams to triple-A Toledo. . . . The White Sox swapped right-handers with their Nashville triple-A team, recalling Scott Ruffcorn and optioning Luis Andujar to the Sounds. . . . The Yankees recalled pitcher Brian Boehringer from triple-A Columbus and optioned pitcher Jim Mecir. . . . The Cubs will call up right-hander Kevin Foster from triple-A Iowa to start today’s game. Foster started the season in the Cubs’ rotation and went 3-2 with a 7.65 ERA before he was sent down. He was 7-6 with a 4.30 ERA for Iowa. . . . The Expos’ Shane Andrews will likely sit out the series with the Padres because of a cut thumb.
