Train That Crosses Australia Is Refitted

After undergoing more than $9 million in renovations over three years, Australia’s only transcontinental train offers rail travelers more comfort and amenities on their long ride across the country.

On its 64-hour, 2,700-mile trip, the Indian Pacific train travels from Sydney on the Pacific to Perth on the Indian Ocean. Riders also may go partway in either direction, buying tickets for only the Sydney-Adelaide segment or for Perth-Adelaide. The upgrades include new lounges and restaurants, and sleeping quarters that have been refitted and redecorated.

The train has three classes of service. First class includes Australian wines in the dining car and private bathrooms in the compartments. Cost for the entire trip, either way: $937 July 1-Jan. 31; $848 Feb. 1-June 30. Holiday-class compartments, designed for couples, have lounge chairs that convert to upper and lower berths; cost $611 and $549. Economy class offers reclining seats and a buffet car; $302 all year. The latter two classes have communal showers and toilet facilities.
