Part Chairmen and the Presidency
Bob Dole will be only the second former Republican Party chairman to be nominated president. Dole served as party chairman between January 1971 and January 1973, during the Nixon administration. George Bush was the only other partv chairman who went on to claim the nomination. Bush succeeded Dole as chairman in 1973, and served for two years. The two men led the GOP through one of its darkest hours: the Watergate scandal.
Putting on a Show
Republican National Convention planners have carefully calculated all the work they did to prepare for this week’s event. According to the official convention program, they devoted 8,000 hours to set up the hall, 7,000 hours to lay cable and 500 hours to inflate balloons. But their work is by no means finished. They estimate it will take eight days to dismantle their handiwork.
