Man Shot After Grabbing Officer’s Gun
A Downey police officer shot and wounded a disabled man Thursday after the man grabbed another officer’s gun and it discharged, police said. The disabled man--who was not identified--later was listed in serious condition at St. Francis Medical Center in Lynwood.
The incident began shortly after 6 p.m. when police responded to a call of a domestic disturbance near Old River School Road and Florence Avenue, Lt. Mike Wheatley said. Wheatley said the man had been arguing with his wife when she pulled him from his wheelchair.
Two officers approached the man, who was sitting down, Wheatley said. After the man wrested the gun from one of the officers, the other officer fired, striking the man twice.
