City, Union Agree on 3-Year Contract
The city and its employees’ union reached a tentative agreement Thursday on a three-year contract.
As part of the contract, the more than 260 non-management employees would receive an 8.33% increase in total compensation--salary and benefits--over those three years, according to Assistant City Manager Laura Herron.
Herron and Barry Hammitt, executive director of Service Employees International Union Local 998, spent three months negotiating the deal.
Local 998 is the same union that represents employees in all non-management positions with the county and in the cities of Moorpark, Thousand Oaks, Port Hueneme, Oxnard and Ventura.
There was some friction during the negotiations after Hammitt and City Councilman Bill Davis had a heated exchange in front of City Hall recently. The two sides later exchanged some sharply worded letters, but the negotiations continued.
The tentative contract still must be ratified by the union, which was expected to vote Thursday evening. If the union approves the deal, the City Council will vote on the contract Monday.
