Leaking Oil Drums Cause Closure of Road
Authorities briefly closed a road in Newbury Park on Monday and dispatched hazardous materials response teams after discovering barrels that had leaked 30 gallons of motor oil into an open field.
The Ventura County Fire Department said firefighters found five 55-gallon drums leaking oil into a field just east of 481 Knollwood Drive a little after 2:33 p.m.
Vicki Sosa, a Fire Department spokeswoman, said an off-duty firefighter from Los Angeles alerted Ventura County authorities to the situation. The department dispatched an engine to the scene before calling in haz-mat teams from the county and the Navy base at Point Mugu.
A sheriff’s deputy said Knollwood Drive at Kimber Drive was reopened Monday evening.
Fire Department officials said they do not know who dumped the barrels in the field, but speculated that they were left there overnight. The Sheriff’s Department is continuing the investigation.
