Phebus Hospitalized After Loss
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Defending champion Keri Phebus of UCLA was upset by Stanford’s Ania Bleszynski on Friday in the quarterfinals of the Division I Women’s Tennis Championships, and later was taken to a hospital to be treated for heat exhaustion.
In temperatures in the mid-90s, Bleszynski won, 6-4, 6-7 (6-8), 6-3, in a match that lasted 3 hours and 26 minutes.
Phebus, who was trying to become the first woman to win successive NCAA titles in singles and doubles, withdrew from the doubles competition later in the day.
The senior from Newport Beach received intravenous treatment at the match and was taken to Tallahassee Memorial hospital, where she was in stable condition, a hospital spokeswoman said.
Sixth-seeded Bleszynski, from Thousand Oaks, plays Florida’s fourth-seeded Jill Craybas in today’s semifinals.
