Philman, DeBeaubien Are Top Athletes

Marie Philman of Edison High and El Toro’s Damian deBeaubien were honored as the Orange County Athletic Directors Assn. athletes of the year Wednesday at Anaheim Stadium.
Philman and deBeaubien were selected from nominated athletes representing each of the county’s 12 athletic leagues.
Philman was The Times Orange County girls’ basketball player of the year last season. A three-time all-county selection, Philman averaged 21.7 points, 9.6 rebounds, shot 49.1% from the field and 78.9% from the free-throw line.
She is the third most prolific scorer in county history, totaling 2,186 points. She is headed to UCLA on a basketball scholarship.
Philman also competes in the shotput, discus, high jump and 100-meter low hurdles for Edison’s track and field team. She holds the Sunset League record in the discus and school records in the high jump, shotput, discus and pentathlon. She will compete Friday night in the Masters Meet at Cypress College.
DeBeaubien was a Times Orange County first-team selection in football. He spent his junior and senior seasons rewriting El Toro’s record book, breaking his mark for solo tackles and assists. He was voted the Sea View League’s defensive player of the year and helped the Chargers win the Division V championship.
DeBeaubien was the league champion in wrestling and was named wrestler of the meet at the Southern Section Division II finals. He also competes in the shot put and discus for theChargers.
