Cal Lutheran’s Mark Ellis defeated Todd Bowlby of Gustavus Adolphus College, 6-2, 6-3, to capture the NCAA Division III men’s singles tennis championship Wednesday at Emory University in Atlanta.
Ellis, a junior from Camarillo High, became the first player in school history to win the title.
After finishing fifth to earn All-American honors in 1995, Ellis was seeded first in the 32-player national tournament, winning five matches in straight sets and not losing more than four games in any set.
Ellis finished with a record of 34-1. He is the first Cal Lutheran player to be chosen Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference player of the year.
