Nearly $700,000 in federal grant money has been approved for local housing rehabilitation projects, public improvements and services.

The City Council this week unanimously approved the funding, which comes from the federal Housing and Urban Development’s Community Development Block Grant program.

The money will be divided among several nonprofit groups and city departments, including:

* $156,120 for the local Neighborhood Housing Service organization, which provides low-interest loans to low-income families so they can buy their first homes, help people rehabilitate run-down properties and run a neighborhood tutoring center.
