Hoover Doubled Over by Harvard-Westlake
The top-seeded Harvard-Westlake High tennis team lived up to that billing by defeating Hoover, 12-6, in the second round of the Southern Section Division II playoffs Thursday at Hoover.
The Wolverines (18-2) swept all nine doubles points, led by the No. 1 team of Farbod Nasseri and David Hatkoff, who won by 6-1, 6-3, 6-1 scores.
David Brown, who won his first two sets, 6-0, 7-6 (7-5) at No. 1 singles for the Wolverines, had to withdraw from his third set because of an injury after his team already had clinched the match.
Each singles player for the Tornadoes (15-2) won two sets.
Glendale 17, Riverside North 1--Ji Chung, Philip Yim and Farhad Hajimirzaee swept their three singles sets for the Dynamiters (19-1) in a Division II second-round playoff match at Glendale.
The Dynamiters play Harvard-Westlake in the quarterfinals Tuesday.
Camarillo 14, Long Beach Wilson 4--Jason Gaono swept his three singles sets for the Scorpions (17-3) in a Southern Section Division II second-round playoff match at Camarillo.
The doubles teams of Mike Mancini-Farouk Gandhi and Garrett Traub-Jared Gaono swept three sets each for the Scorpions.
Burbank 15, Cerritos 3--The Bulldogs’ three doubles teams remained undefeated in the playoffs, sweeping all nine sets in a Division III second-round playoff match at Burbank (19-1).
Calabasas 10, Campbell Hall 8--Matt Snowdon and Marc Beerham each swept three singles sets for the Coyotes (14-5) in a Division III second-round playoff match at Campbell Hall.
Beerham rallied from a 5-1 deficit in a set with Shaunt Vanerian to win, 7-5.
Diamond Bar 15, Rio Mesa 3--Ryan Terry swept all three of his matches for Diamond Bar in a Division I second-round match at Rio Mesa. Twins Bob and Mike Bryan did not play for Rio Mesa because of a commitment with the U.S. Junior National team.
HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL
Villanova 13, Village Christian 7--Juan Valenzuela hit two doubles and his ninth home run of the year for host Villanova (15-6) in a first-round Division VI playoff game. Valenzuela and Mike Mckinney combined for seven runs batted in. Villanova’s Mike Mellein struck out nine.
COLLEGE TRACK
American West Conference championships--Heptathlete Margo Hammerstrom of Cal State Northridge won the long jump with a leap of 17 feet 1/4 inch and finished fourth in the heptathlon with 3,421 points. Teammate Monica Tobin placed fifth in the event with 3,413 points and Eman Barfield (2,428) was seventh. Alicyn Chappelle of Sacramento State won the event with 4,191 points.
