Volunteers Sought to Help Food Bank
Food Share, Ventura County’s food bank, is looking for volunteers to pick produce from fields, drive trucks or work in the distribution warehouse in Oxnard.
“Every head of lettuce picked, loaf of bread brought into the warehouse, or canned or packaged food gathered helps feed a hungry child or adult,” said Dan Williams, Food Share’s volunteer coordinator.
“With all of the government cutbacks and company downsizing, it means there are more needy families out there. This food goes directly to the needy at no cost.”
More than two dozen Ventura County farmers allow Food Share workers to glean produce left over after harvesting, Williams said. Broccoli, carrots, lettuce, cabbage and cauliflower are among vegetables retrieved.
Work in the warehouse entails sorting, packing and storing donated day-old bread and canned goods.
Drivers are needed to pick up bread donated by supermarkets.
Most volunteers work several hours weekly, Williams said.
To volunteer, call Williams between 8 and 9:30 a.m. or between 3 and 4 p.m. at 983-7100.
