Apple to Fix Faulty Macs: The Cupertino, Calif.-based computer maker said it will repair or replace faulty Macintosh desktop and portable personal computers, although it could not say how many that might be. It will ask customers who have the machines to ship them to the factory for free repairs. The flaws, which Apple Computer Inc. executives said numbered a bit more than usual, have appeared at a critical time for the company. Apple’s market share among home computer sales has fallen to a new low and it recently reported a $740-million quarterly loss. Apple would not discuss how much the recall program will cost. Affected models include most of the Performas sold in the U.S. last year, a few Power Macintosh models, specifically the 5200 and 5300, and PowerBook laptop models 5300 and 190. Apple wants resellers to return their unsold PowerBook 190s and 5300s.
